5 Tips to Keep your Septic System in Tip-Top Shape this Winter

Don't let your septic system freeze once winter is here. Septic tanks need to be winterized before cold weather starts. These tips can help you save busted pipes, loss of water, and thousands of dollars of repair.

1. Freezing Temperature

When temperatures go freezing at 32 degrees Fahrenheit the water in your tank can freeze, which could damage components and cause costly repairs. Check for cracks or other signs of damage regularly during colder months.

2. Insulation

Before freezing temperatures arrive, placing a layer of mulch close to 12 inches over any pipes is best to provide extra insulation. You can also replace your pipe with an insulated pipe and add foam panels over your septic tank.

3. Regular use

If you plan to be away for a long period of time during the winter, have someone use water in your home regularly to prevent still water from freezing. You can pump out your tank before leaving as well. If you are away for a short period, have a steady drip of water flow.

4. Keep off!

Avoid parking, walking, and driving off the drain field. Frost can seep deeper into the soil, causing it to reach pipes and tanks to freeze. Let the snow melt naturally.

5. DON’T use anti-freeze

Anti-freeze is meant to be used in automobiles. The chemicals used in the anti-freeze are not recommended for use in water supply systems. It is best to reach out and get your septic system inspected and find the best solutions to winterize your system.
