4 Ways to Prepare Your Septic System for Summer

With warmer weather coming up, the last thing you want to think of is your septic system. To get the most out of your summer with no worries, it's good to follow the tips below.

  1. Be mindful of water usage

The hot summer days call for pools, sprinklers, water balloon fights, and anything to cool you and your family down. Drain fields can only handle so much during the summer, especially if it's been a wet summer. Be aware of when you are doing laundry, using the sprinklers, filling up the pool, and other things that require large amounts of water.

  1. Don’t plant that there!

Landscaping plants that can deeply root into where your septic tank is can cause destruction to the tank. You cannot plant trees and shrubs. It is better to plant shallow roots and annual plants if you want some landscaping. Remember, it is also best not to park above your septic tank.

  1. DON’T flush that!

To avoid a disaster at any time, it is best to remember and act on not flushing things down that can damage your septic system. It’s best to get into the habit of not flushing napkins, disposable wipes, condoms, feminine hygiene products, Q-tips, floss, make-up wipes, diapers, chemicals, grease, and coffee grounds.

  1. Book an inspection

Keep up your septic system maintenance, and you shouldn't run into problems. But some things can always happen with wet summers and clogged lines. It's best to get your tank pumped yearly for two to three years.
